Love it or hate it, cardio is an important component of your overall fitness plan. It helps you burn calories, strengthens your heart and improves your overall endurance. Cardio has also been shown to improve mood and focus!
And when you choose the right cardio exercise, you don’t have to spend as much time doing it. You can even work your muscles at the same time. I think that sounds like a great idea! Don’t you agree?
Here are three cardio exercises that burn major calories, and none of them includes jogging for hours on a treadmill!
- Sprints: Sprinting can burn a whopping 12-15 calories per minute on average for most people! And you don’t always have to use a track or jump on a treadmill. You can opt for a lower impact sprint via a spin bike, elliptical, swimming pool or stair mill, too. Even pushing heavy weight like a sled can constitute a sprint. Just remember to start slow as a beginner and make sure you warm up beforehand.
- Rowing: Rowing burns major calories, because it utilizes multiple muscle groups at once while challenging your cardiovascular system. You can easily burn 10-15 calories a minute depending on your intensity.
- Plyometrics: Just like sprinting and rowing, plyometrics (i.e. jumping, leaping, bounding, box jumps, medicine ball slams) burns major calories, because it involves several muscle groups in one workout. You don’t have to spend a lot of time for a great entire body workout, and you’ll see quick changes to your musculature and physique if you incorporate this training into your fitness regimen a few times a week.
These cardio exercises all burn major calories because they multitask and challenge your body at varying intensities. You can modify many of these exercises to be less intense on the joints, so don’t be afraid of trying something just because it sounds too hard.
Cardio doesn’t have to be boring; if you keep it interesting as well as challenging, you can achieve many of your fitness goals in less time than you ever imagined!
